PETALING JAYA (Feb 7, 2014): People in Sabah are advised not to worry or panic due to the H1N1 flu virus detected in the state recently, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam (pix).
He said the seven cases of H1N1 detected in Sabah were common cold cases with similar symptoms and complications of the seasonal influenza.
Dr Subramaniam explained that the spread of the H1N1 virus infection was through the spittle coughed up by or sneezing of an infected person.
"This is not a pandemic, so there is no need to panic," he told reporters after visiting the community at Mentari Court here, today, while assuring the situation was under control.
On Feb 3, seven individuals, five children and two adults, tested positive for H1N1 virus at the Likas Women's and Children's hospital and all of them have been given anti-viral treatment.
Dr Subramaniam said four of the individuals have been discharged, whereas the other three were still receiving treatment and their conditions were reported to be stable.
"The state Health Department has taken preventive measures to control the spread of the virus by getting everyone to practice personal hygiene like washing their hands frequently with soap or sanitiser as well as practising proper coughing manners," he said.
Those in risk of infection and complications due to influenza, such as children, the elderly and pregnant women are encouraged to get a seasonal influenza vaccine available in the market, he said.
"Individuals who have flu symptoms similar to influenza-like illness are advised to stay home and not go to public places," he said. – Bernama
