Red paint, duck at Malaysiakini office

KUALA LUMPUR: A live duck in a box and red paint splashed outside the office of news portal Malaysiakini in Bangsar Utama today had its staff baffled over the motive of those behind the act.
The duck that apparently appeared dehydrated and sickly, was placed in a box which had a picture of Seputeh MP Teresa Kok pasted on the side. It was left at the entrance of the building.
It is learnt that an editorial staff, who reported for work at 6.30am, found the paint and the box before lodging a police report.
Malaysiakini editor-in-chief and co-founder Steven Gan said today he was clueless as to why the attack was carried out against the news portal.
"I do not want to speculate but judging from the photo of Teresa on the box, we believe it could possibly be due to the extensive news coverage we had done on her case recently – the controversial video, the protest against her and other news," he said.
Kuala Lumpur police acting CID chief ACP Khairi Ahrasa said the case will be investigated for criminal intimidation.
He said police will view closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) recordings in the vicinity to trace the culprits.
Last week, vandals pulled off a similar act on Teresa's office at Jalan Kuchai Lama, splashing red paint and leaving a dead chicken at the main entrance.
Khairi said the probe into the case has yet to yield positive results as the CCTV footages gathered from the area had failed to provide clear images of the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng condemned the incident.
He urged Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to take action against those responsible or face public displeasure at the next polls.
