Water woes to hit 3 million in Selangor

PETALING JAYA: Phase one of water rationing involving 60,000 households in Selangor starts today while phase two, set to start on Sunday, will eventually affect some three million consumers in the state.
Syabas corporate communications and public affairs department assistant general manager Priscilla Alfred said five water treatment plants are reducing treated water production on the state government's orders.
The treatment plants involved are the Sungai Selangor Phase 1, 2, and 3 treatment plants, the Sungai Rasa treatment plant, and the Rantau Panjang treatment plant.
The plants, which supply about 60% of the state's treated water, will reduce output by 200 million litres per day (MLD) initially, which will affect 300,000 households or 1.2 million consumers.
Treated water production will gradually be reduced to 500 MLD at the plants based on the National Water Services Commission's (Span) approval, which will affect up to three million consumers.
"Consumers in Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Kuala Langat, and Hulu Selangor will be facing disruptions or low water pressure," Priscilla said in a statement today.
This is due to the Sungai Selangor dam reducing raw water supply to the five treatment plants so that raw water reserves do not deplete further.
Span also instructed Syabas to plan a scheduled water distribution plan by today, which if approved will be announced the next day and implemented on Sunday.
