BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police have formed a task force to nab thieves impersonating civil servants to rob senior citizens and housewives in Penang.
State CID chief SAC Mazlan Kesah said police have identified two such groups made up of suspects in their 20s. He said the groups' modus operandi were to portray themselves as government servants to earn their victims' trust before gaining entry into their home.
He said the thieves targeted the jewellery worn by the victims and usually struck between 7.30am and 12.30pm as those were the times when the men of families were at work.
Mazlan said police believe the suspects were involved in 15 cases since January with total losses amounting to RM84,550. In an unrelated case, police found a Nepalese's factory worker hanging from a tree in Jalan Lintang, Bayan Lepas today.
