GEORGE TOWN: Penang wants more disabled people to participate in sports, with the current pool consisting of less than 20 such athletes.
Penang Sports and Recreation Association of Persons with Disabilities president Dr Tiun Ling Ta said new blood was urgently needed.
"The pool needs to be larger to maintain sporting performance at competitions for such people.
(People with disabilities) should engage in sports," he said, citing six state athletes who competed in the Seventh Asean Para Games in Myanmar and won medals in swimming, powerlifting, ping-pong and archery.
"It is important that more disabled people are willing to try out the disabled sports programmes offered by the state," he said at a press conference today after handing out sporting equipment to junior and senior para-athletes.
Those interested to try out the sports programme in the state are urged to contact Tiun at 013 430 2096 and Kho at 019 448 7866.
