Ringgit closes lower against US dollar

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit closed lower against the US dollar today as positive US jobs data enabled the greenback to gain traction, dealers said.

At 5pm, the local unit was quoted at 3.2370/2390 against the greenback compared with Thursday's 3.2215/2245. A dealer said demand for the US dollar rose since morning after US jobs data came out on Thursday.

The US employment data indicated that the number of US citizens who were unemployed had declined and this has increased investors' positive sentiments on the greenback. The local unit depreciated against the Singapore dollar to 2.5933/5962 from 2.5807/5850 on Thursday and fell against the euro to 4.4935/4976 from 4.4650/4698 yesterday.

It fell against the British pound to 5.4252/4301 from 5.4025/4078 previously and eased against the yen to 3.1819/1845 from 3.1708/1740 on Thursday. -– Bernama
