Prevention before cure

A 2015 survey conducted by the Ministry of Health revealed that one in every two Malaysians suffer from high cholesterol. That equates to half of Malaysians under the age of 40, suffering from high cholesterol, which lead to heart disease – one of the major causes of fatality among Malaysians. Still, many Malaysians hold on to belief that it will not happen to them.

Seeing the urgent need to address this common yet foolish misconception, Nestle Omega Plus officially formalised its partnership with Institut Jantung Negara's (IJN) non-profit arm, IJN Foundation.

Unite, support and stand strong

Omega Plus has previously collaborated with IJN Foundation. Its alliance goes back to 2015 when Omega Plus supported IJN's Wellness Centre patients by providing customised meal plans and check-out kits upon discharge. In 2016, Nestle Omega Plus donated close to RM50,000 to IJN Foundation, to aid its Patient Assistance Programme, which provides financial assistance for surgery and treatment for needy heart patients at IJN.

"By partnering with the IJN Foundation, we aim to prompt and incite more Malaysians to act now and take better care of their hearts. This is in line with Nestle's purpose of enhancing the quality of life and contributing to a healthier future," said Nestle (Malaysia) Berhad business executive officer of milks Ng Su Yen.

Work that heart

With this year's collaboration driving a movement towards better heart health through a series of events since August, join Nestle Omega Plus' series of walking events called "Walk-a-Sunday", next scheduled on Sept 17 at TTDI Park, Kuala Lumpur from 7am till 11am and 4pm till 7pm or at Bukit Dumbar Park in Penang from 7am till 11am.

IJN Foundation supports the cause and creed by providing free cholesterol checks during the event. Participants will also be able to taste the goodness of Nestle Omega Plus via free samplings and purchase packs of their sold at a special rate at the events. No pre-registration is required to join the walk. However, the first 300 participants will receive "goodie bags".

‘Mane’ attraction

The fair welcomed shoppers to an atmosphere that resembled a lively theme park scenario. Mini games such as “Throw and Win” and “Hole in One” kept the younger set and young-at-heart entertained. Shoppers who presented their Watsons VIP card were able to redeem free popcorn and balloon sculptures. Hair care brand Bad Lab was on site to offer free express haircuts with any purchase of their products.

The Watsons Hair Temptations Fair was officially launched by Watsons Malaysia general manager and country head Caryn Loh. The entire event was made possible due to the collaboration between A Cut Above hair salon, fashion apparel brands Old Navy, Yolo gentleman and d.d collective with the support of Amber Chia Academy, and of course, Watsons Malaysia.

“We often view our hair as a reflection of our identity because it is both personal and public. Many women feel that a bad hair day equates to a bad day. The key tip is to practise good hair care habits to have perfect hair,” said Loh in her opening speech.

“Every woman can have strong, shiny and healthy hair if they use the right products and practise a proper hair care routine. Sparking care, spurring unity

The team ferried with them goodie bags for the young ones, containing a variety of treats such as sweets, milk, bread and 7-Eleven in-house brand products, along with stationery items and materials, which came in handy later during activity time.

Leading the activity session were 7-Eleven representatives, who presented the children with a task – to construct a Malaysian flag themed pinwheel fan. Volunteers and MFD interpreters guided the young artists with their creations.

Following that was a simple Q&A quiz pertaining Malaysia. This was aimed to educate and expand the children’s knowledge and share the importance of patriotism and unity.

Sharing about the centre was MFD executive secretary Eamienor Zakiah Mohd Zuki.

“With approximately 47,000 deaf people across the nation, our purpose is to help improve the lives of the community. We hope that raising public awareness of our cause will encourage society to learn sign language and extend their efforts in aiding the community.

“Even though we have translators to facilitate the programmes that we have, they are often needed elsewhere to assist clients. Hence, we require more interpreters to expand our services further and provide a wider range of courses that can better benefit the community,” she added.

Commenting on the event, 7-Eleven Malaysia general manager of marketing Ronan Lee said: “It is truly a pleasure to be able to bring joy to the community in conjunction with the National Day celebration. Seeing the radiant smiles is rewarding, and we are elated to know that they’ve enjoyed the activity immensely. We hope that this initiative will help foster creativity and cultivate the spirit of unity, as embedding positive values in our current generation would lead us to a bright future.”

Since its inception in 1997, the MFD has supported the deaf community by offering educational and living skills programmes such as reading, writing, and basic calculation. These aim to enable the deaf to become independent. The organisation also provides Malaysian Sign Language classes and interpreters for hire.]]>
