KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat was told today that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had received six complaints regarding the supply and sale of devices that can hack into wi-fi connections.
Deputy Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari said of the total, three investigation papers were opened and appropriate action taken.
"To date, three cases involving the sale of these devices were sentenced by the courts," he said when replying to Datuk Jumat Idris (BN-Sepanggar) during the question-and-answer session.
Jailani also said it was detected that most wi-fi hacking were carried out by using devices such as wi-fi booster, a gadget that can amplify signals to attract wi-fi signals within a distance of one to three kilometres.
To avoid such activities from becoming rampant , the Commission was collaborating with SIRIM Berhad to carry out regular marketing surveillance of such devices nationwide to ensure the sale of the equipment or device was contained, he said.
He said the ministry took a serious view of these devices ownership of which are an offence under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and advised consumers to always protect their passwords so as not to fall victim to hacking. – Bernama
