KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is still investigating the RM4 million lost in "investments" by the Malaysian Paralympic Council's (MPC), in an events management company by its president and his family.
MPC secretary-general Siti Zaharah Abdul Khalid confirmed the matter today in a press conference at MPC's first carnival held at Titiwangsa Lake here.
"At the moment we still haven't received any official letters (from them) as it's still being investigated.
"We've tried to meet them but it's taking some time. Hopefully, we'll have a meeting with them (on the matter) soon," she said.
She added that despite the expose on the issue made by theSun three years ago, Datuk Zainal Abidin Abu Zarin is still the president of MPC though he has been suspended from his duties in accordance with MPC's constitution pending the finalisation of the investigation.
"At the moment, I would say we can't comment on the amount lost as we're in the process of recovering it," she said.
When asked how much has been recovered since 2012, she said:"The repayment made then was RM200,000. With the steering committee in place we now have to recover RM3.4 million. In the previous AGM (annual general meeting) we've also overturned the write-off."
"(This means that) there's no write-off of the money (starting) from 2014. There's also no dateline (to recover it).
It was reported on Oct 4, 2012 in news portal Daily Express that MPC had written off RM3.8 million of the RM4 million investment made in Paralympik Ventures Sdn Bhd.
On MPC's decision to maintain Zainal Abidin as president, she said "We're not judges to decide. We can't say whether he did it or not. Therefore, we'll leave it to the authorities (to investigate on the matter)."
She added an official statement will be made once the investigation ended and has been discussed in their AGM.
Overseeing the issue is a five-man panel headed by Assoc Prof Dr Annuar Summ, Siti Zaharah and their legal representatives, she said.
