SHAH ALAM: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) delegates at its annual convention want the party's de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to be the next prime minister should the opposition win the 14th General Election.
Some 1,000 delegates, including the party’s top leadership, were seen holding a “Anwar PM ke-7 (Anwar 7th Prime Minister) placard after PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail delivered her policy speech.
Also present at the event were other Pakatan Harapan leaders, including Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and its president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
However, the duo did not raise the placard, instead Mahathir was seen holding a handphone, presumably snapping pictures of the event while Muhyiddin applauded the delegates' action.
When asked by the media on why the duo did not raise the placard, PPBM deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir said: “I think they were too busy taking pictures and that’s why they didn’t hold the placard up.”
He added he himself was not given the placard.
When asked whether the coalition would support Anwar to be the next Prime Minister, Mukhriz said the decision to select the shadow cabinet must be agreed by all four Pakatan Harapan component parties.
“Why do you ask me? You should ask Harapan. I am the deputy of Bersatu (PPBM) and there are four parties in Pakatan Harapan,” he said.
The former Kedah Mentri Besar however said the matter has not been discussed at the top Pakatan Harapan level.
“I agree that we should announce the Prime Minister candidate before the upcoming election.
“But let us (Pakatan Harapan) discuss this first and come out with a decision,” he said.
