Book review: The Girl with the Lost Smile

11 Apr 2018 / 10:34 H.

CHLOE LONG used to be a girl who loved to smile, and her brilliant smiles would be enough to cheer up anybody who was feeling bad.
She was especially cheerful on her 11th birthday, waiting breathlessly for her parents to burst into her room with her presents, and hugs and smiles.
They never came, and by the time she crept out of her room to the sounds of them arguing, her usual smile seemed to be missing in action. By the end of the day, it was official.
She had lost her smile.
She looked everywhere for it (under her pillow, under her bed, under her nose), and she tried everything to bring it back (her favourite food, her favourite gran, her favourite jokes) but nothing seems so be working.
Is it because she has just turned 11 and is too old for smiles? Like her parents, who seem to be always mad and arguing? Is it her fault?
Things look so bad that Chloe is feeling hopeless, until one night, something magical happens, and she finds herself on an adventure that is simply out of this world.
What is a smile without love, hope and bravery? And what is a children’s book without imagination and lots of illustrations?
Well, Miranda Hart’s debut children’s book has all that and more. Definitely enough to keep the young ones occupied.
So smile, and enjoy.
