TANJUNG MALIM: It is general knowledge that coconut milk is among the main ingredients in "cendol" (a type of thin broth of coconut milk and syrup with small pieces of boiled rice flour ), but a trader has found an alternative ingredient – oil palm milk – to make the dessert more attractive and tasty.
Md Fozi Shamsudin, 43, who operates his cendol business at Taman Bernam Baru here, said he and his wife, Norasida Bujang, 45, got the recipe from a relative in Negeri Sembilan.
"I want our cendol to be different to attract more customers. The cendol with oil palm milk tastes better and our customers like it. Now, we have regular customers," he told Bernama recently.
Md Fozi said the oil palm milk could be bought at supermarkets. He used up to 30 kilogramme of the milk a week in the preparation of his special "cendol".
"To make one large jug of cendol, I use three packets of the oil palm milk. I prepare the cendol in two sizes, the small one is sold for RM3 and the 'giant' size is RM5," he said, adding that he operates his business daily from 10 am to 7 pm.
"Customers who want to add in corn or nuts or glutinous rice in their cendol will have to pay 50 sen extra , while those who want to have everything in their cendol have to pay RM1 extra," he added.
Md Fozi , who also accepts orders for catering, said he planned to add other flavours to his cendol, like durian.
He said celebrities and politicians, including former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his wife, Tun Jeanne Abdullah, had tasted his cendol.
"I never expect Pak Lah and his wife to come. He came to know about my cendol business after it went viral on the social media," he added. — Bernama
