BESTARI JAYA: Water supply to the Klang Valley which was cut since yesterday, due to urgent maintenance work at the SSP3 water treatment plant, will be restored in stages from 6pm tomorrow.
Selangor Infrastructure, Public Amenities, Agriculture Modernisation and Agro-based Industry Permanent Committee chairman Zaidy Abdul Talib, however, said it would take from 36 to 72 hours for supply to be fully restored.
"Kuala Langat and Hulu Selangor can expect supply to be fully restored by 6am on Saturday while for Petaling, Klang/Shah Alam, Gombak and Kuala Lumpur till 6pm on Sunday," he told a press conference at the SSP3 treatment plant, here today.
He said in the unexpected incident yesterday, the failure of the Surge Vessel System to function properly had caused five 1,100mm diameter pipes to be damaged, with two of them bursting severely.
"Rectification work on the system is being expedited to restore supply as quickly as possible to the 563,622 accounts in the six affected areas," he noted.
Zaidy said the critical repair work at the SSP3 Water Treatment Plant being carried out by Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor (SPLASH) was to fix the damaged Pump Number 3's valve after getting approval from the National Water Services Commission (SPAN).
He said the damage to the valve was only detected after Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Puas) found that there was a reduction of water at the Bukit Tadun Pump House on Jan 26.
"The depletion of water level at the pump house is due to the reduction of the pumping rate of clean water from the SSP3 Water Treatment Plant operated by SPLASH," Zaidy explained.
He said Puas eventually was forced to lodge a report to SPAN after the efforts of getting an explanation from SPLASH about the problem became futile.
However, an investigation by SPAN on Feb 5 revealed that not only was the Pump Number 3 damaged so were three others, namely pumps 4, 5 and 8, he said.
The three pumps, however, had nothing to do with the pipe burst mishap yesterday, which left five people injured, added Zaidy. — Bernama
