PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) grew 1.9% in August 2019 against the same month of the previous year, attributed to the increase in the index of manufacturing (3.7%) and electricity (0.3%).
Meanwhile, the index of mining recorded a decline of 3.9%.
Chief statistician Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said on a year-on-year basis, the manufacturing sector output rose by 3.7% in August 2019 after recording a growth of 4.0% in July 2019.
“The major sub-sectors contributing to the increase in August were non-metallic mineral products, basic metal and fabricated metal products (4.3%); electrical and electronics products (3.5%); and petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (2.8%),” he said.
For the month, the electricity sector output increased 0.3% as compared to the same month of the previous year.
The mining sector output recorded a 3.9% drop in August 2019 as compared to the same period of the previous year, due to a 9.5% decrease in the crude oil and condensate index. Meanwhile, natural gas index rose 1.2%.
