New Covid-19 cluster in Kedah detected

PETALING JAYA: A new Covid-19 cluster has been detected in the Kuala Muda district located in Kedah, according to the Health Ministry.

“The first case is a Malaysian man who works as a police officer. The case that was reported is a colleague to the first case,“ Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement today.

Following that, he said active case detection activities and close contact screening was conducted yesterday on 124 individuals and the case was found positive today.

“From this number, two were found positive, five negative and 117 are still awaiting results,“ he said, adding that all the cases in this cluster are Malaysians.

He added that sanitisation and cleaning activities are ongoing, and the source of infection is under investigation.

Further, Noor Hisham said an additional 11 cases have been added to the Tawar cluster, with 10 being from Kedah and one in Penang.

“As of today 12pm, as many as 261 people have been screened from this cluster, and 21 people have been found positive,“ he said

He also announced that as of 12pm today, there are 20 new positive cases, taking the total number of cases to 9,149.

“Of that number, 196 are active cases, whereby four are in the intensive care unit (ICU), and one case needs ventilator assistance,“ he said.

He added seven cases have since recovered from Covid-19, leading the number of recoveries to rise to 8,828.

Noor Hisham said no new deaths have been reported, maintaining the number of fatalities at 125.

Of the 20 new cases, he said, seven are import cases from overseas involving six Malaysians and one foreigner, while 13 cases are local transmissions.

“The import cases returned from Lebanon, Yemen, France, Indonesia, and Taiwan,“ he said.

He also said the local transmission cases involve Malaysians only.
