THE German automaker celebrated the world premiere of its new 911 on the eve of the Los Angeles Auto Show.

It is the eighth generation version of this emblematic Porsche model, and it is already available to order.

It comes as no surprise to see that the freshly unveiled 2019 version of the 911 is faster and more powerful than ever.

It gets a newly developed eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and next-generation flat-six turbocharged engines, delivering up to 450 horsepower in the S models (a gain of 30 horsepower).

The most powerful model, the Porsche 911 4S, has a top speed of 308km/h and does 0-100km/h in just 3.6 seconds (3.7 seconds for the Coupé). A further 0.2 seconds can be gained with the optional “Sport Chrono” package.

In a world first, Porsche has developed “wet mode,“ included as standard in the new 911. This function detects water on the road, which can lead to slippery driving conditions, and optimises the vehicle for safety by selecting the most suitable driving mode.

The new Porsche 911 also has an anti-collision assistance system and brake-assist function as standard.

A night vision assist function using a thermal camera is also available as an optional extra for the 911 for the first time.

There are relatively few changes to the exterior design -- although the 911 does get new LED headlights -- but the interior has been seriously reworked, getting a striking new 10.9-inch central touchscreen.

Located underneath is a compact switch unit with five buttons for direct access to important vehicle functions.
