SHAH ALAM: Cases of blackmail over nude photos and videos are becoming rampant, causing victims losses of thousands of ringgit after they gave in to the threats of the perpetrators.

Selangor police chief Commissioner Datuk Arjunaidi Mohamed today said that between January and June this year, 220 such cases involving extortion and threats were reported

The victims were blackmailed with their nude photos and videos which they had shared or had unsuspectingly exposed themselves to the perpetrators in social media platforms.

The victims comprised both men and women aged between 20 and 60.

Arjunaidi said 29 cases involved ex-husbands, boyfriends and acquaintances of the victims while 137 cases involved cases of victims harassed with nude material unrelated to them by unknown people.

He said 54 cases were the work of syndicates that prey on victims by luring them to strip down in social media platforms before secretly recording them.

The victims are later blackmailed and extorted for cash.

“The victims had paid between RM3,000 and RM50,000 which were transferred to both local and foreign banks following the sextortion,”Arjunaidi said.

He said the among the social media platforms used by the perpetrators are WeChat, Facebook, MiChat, WhatsApp, Line, Skype,Mingle2, Tantan, Tinder, Twitter and Telegram.

Arjunaidi advised the public to stay away from such activities to avoid being victimised.
