KUALA LUMPUR: The allocation of RM15 million for the development of electronic sports or E-Sports in Budget 2021 proves the government’s commitment to the field, says Esports Kuala Lumpur Association (ESKL) president Hisham Darus.
He said the amount would prove useful to the E-Sports ecosystem including in terms of education and grassroots development at a time when the world is facing the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The decision to continue with the specific allocation for E-Sports development as announced in Budget 2021 shows the government’s continued commitment to elevating electronic sports among the community in our country.
“On behalf of the E-Sports community in Kuala Lumpur, I express my deepest appreciation and gratitude for the government’s commitment,“ he said when contacted by Bernama, today.
According to Hisham, the E-Sports ecosystem also included various elements that could contribute to the country’s economic development such as the organising of tournaments, coaching and content creation.
“It is hoped that this allocation can be fully utilised to educate and develop E-Sports in order to provide an economic ecosystem as well as guidance for youths in Malaysia in general,“ he explained.
It is the third consecutive year that E-Sports development has been given special attention in the national Budget, with RM10 and 20 million allocated for the years 2019 and 2020 respectively. — Bernama
