JOHOR BAHRU: A shop assistant was sentenced to eight years’ jail and fined RM30,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here today after pleading guilty to driving recklessly or in a dangerous manner, resulting in death of a policeman, last Sunday.

Mohamad Syafiq Lokman, 25, made the plea after the charge was read out to him before Magistrate Mohd Zaki Abd Rahman.

He also lost his eligibility to apply for a driving licence for five years.

The accused who was driving a Perodua Myvi car at the time of the incident was charged with committing the offence at 6am on Nov 1.

The charge was framed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Mohamad Syafiq was also fined RM1,800 in default three months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to driving without a valid licence, an offence under Section 26(1) (Act 333/87) of the same act.

In a separate court, Magistrate Nurasidah Rahman sentenced him to 12 months’ jail and fined him RM5,000 for obstructing a civil servant from carrying out his duty.

He was also slapped with eight months’ jail and placed under observation for two years after he pleaded guilty to inserting drugs namely amphetamine and methamphetamine into his body, an offence under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The offence was committed at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department office of the Johor Bahru Selatan district police headquarters at 11.30 pm on Nov 1.

All the jail sentences will run consecutively.

Norasidah also sentenced Mohamad Syafiq’s friend Siti Noor Ashikin Muhammad Arifin, 26, to eight months’ jail after she pleaded guilty to the same offence.

The single mother was fined RM1,000, in default six months’ jail for allowing the car that she rented to be used by her boyfriend who did not have a valid driving licence.

Siti Noor Ashikin’s boyfriend Muhamad Syahrihudin Abdul Majid, 24, was fined RM1,000, and ordered to serve three months jail if he failed to pay the fine, for driving without a valid licence.

In another court, Muhamad Aiman Romli, 24, who was also in the Perodua Myvi was sentenced to eight months jail by Magistrate R. Salini for inserting amphetamine and methamphetamine drugs into his body.

Deputy public prosecutors Tengku Amir Zaki Tengku Abd Rahman and Noridayu Md Kassim appeared for the prosecution.

In the incident on Sunday, a policeman was killed and another seriously injured in a road accident when their patrol car crashed into an SUV and overturned while pursuing suspected criminals in a Perodua Myvi car at Jalan Kangkar Tebrau/Jalan Tun Teja here.

Constable Nicholester Dadup Unggat, 20, died after suffering severe head injuries while his partner, who was driving the MPV, Lance Corporal Mohammad Fadhirul Musa, 32, was severely injured. — Bernama
