14 projects underway to build, upgrade health facilities in Sabah: Minister

TAWAU: The Health Ministry has announced that it has lined up 14 projects for Sabah costing RM238.5 million.

Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad (pix) said that eight of the projects involved the construction of new facilities, namely health clinics and quarters, while the rest would be to upgrade hospitals.

“The projects are a continuous initiative by the federal government to look after the welfare and well-being of the people in Sabah,“ he told reporters after a visit to the Tawau Hospital where upgrading works were being carried out.

The projects that involve the construction of new facilities are the health clinics in Kota Marudu, Pulau Sebatik in Tawau, Sandakan, Tenom, Kampung Sungai Manila, Kudat and Tawau, and the Sabah Dental Specialist Centre.

Some of these health clinics would also see the construction of quarters including the integration quarters at the Tawau Hospital.

Meanwhile, upgrading works will be carried out at the Duchess of Kent Hospital, Ranau Hospital, Kota Marudu Hospital, Beaufort Hospital and Hospital Mesra Bukit Padang.

Dr Dzulkefly said 10 ministry projects were already underway including the upgrading of the Tawau Hospital which is expected to be completed by December 2020.

“We also have pending projects, while some have been cancelled but they will be reviewed and tabled at the post cabinet meeting,“ he said.

The minister said that he also had discussions with Sabah Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister, Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung, as well as Assistant Minister in the Sabah Chief Minister’s Department, Datuk Jimmy Wong, and took note of the state’s requirements and shortcomings. — Bernama
