142 nabbed in anti-drug operations

BUTTERWORTH: A total of 144 men, including two drug traffickers, were arrested in a two-week anti-drug operation in Ujung Batu here.

Seberang Perai Utara district police chief ACP Noorzainy Mohd Noor said some of the suspects, aged between 20 and 60, were unemployed while the rest were self-employed and labourers.

“Police conducted the operation between Aug 8 and Thursday, rounding up 131 addicts, 11 for possession of drugs and two for trafficking in banned substances,” he said in a statement here today.

He said the suspects all tested positive for drugs.

During the operation, police seized 30 gm of heroin and 5 gm of syabu, all worth about RM2,000 and which could be used by 200 addicts.

Noorzainy said 61 of them have been charged with various offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 while the rest would be charged after the completion of chemist reports.

Meanwhile, he said two school students were arrested less than 24 hours after they allegedly stole RM30 from the donation box of a mosque in Tasek Gelugor.

The management of Masjid Jamek Pokok Tampang, Tasek Gelugor made a police report based on a CCTV recording of the theft, which is believed to have been committed between 10.55pm and 11.03pm on Thursday.

“We arrested the two 14-year-old boys at 3pm yesterday at their homes in Tasek Gelugor,“ he said.

They have been remanded for investigation. — Bernama
