KUALA LUMPUR: About 4,000 Malaysians wearing sarong and other traditional attire banded together to express their support for the ‘‘Keretapi Sarong 2019’’ programme in conjunction with Malaysia Day at five Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations in the city today.

The participants marched in numbers through the busy streets of KL and converged at Masjid Jamek Station before moving to Merdeka Square, singing patriotic songs along the way. Their colourful presence grabbed the attention of city folks and tourists along the way.

Tourism Arts and Culture Deputy Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said the ministry is encouraged by the overwhelming support by the public for the programme and might expand it beyond Kuala Lumpur next year.

“This kind of programme shows the rich diversity in culture and the solidarity among Malaysians in celebrating Malaysia Day.

“Through programmes like this, the ministry together with non-governmental organisations such as local community group, Local Companion (Locco) has for the last three years helped bring the tradition of wearing the sarong back to life,“ he told the media at Merdeka Square, today. — Bernama
