PETALING JAYA: DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang’s support for Umno MPs to be absorbed into Pakatan Harapan (PH) is a betrayal to the voters, Gerakan President Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai said today.

He said 95% of votes from the Chinese community in the 14th General Election were cast based on their disappointment with Umno leaders.

“Pakatan Harapan (PH) now openly accepts Umno leaders who want to cross over,“ Lau said in a statement. “It is undoubtedly a betrayal to the people.”

“Although DAP superficially stated that it disagrees with the move to accept Umno MPs and leaders, but Lim Kit Siang has agreed to it in private.”

“His hypocrisy is disappointing and it is even worrying as this would aggravate the ‘frog culture’.”

He said the “frog culture” of elected representatives crossing to other parties would hurt the Malaysian democratic system and render elections meaningless.

Lau suggested that the proposed anti-hopping law to ban elected MPs and state assemblymen from crossing over to other political parties be enacted.

“The law must state that if a candidate who contests under a particular logo of a party and wins, but he or she subsequently decides to cross over to other political party, then the seat would be declared vacant automatically and a by-election would be held,“ he said.

“The proposed law would not infringe a person’s democratic freedom to join another political party, and at the same time, ensures that voters would not be betrayed.”
