GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) will provide additional domestic and bulk waste collection services in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.
Mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang (pix) said the additional domestic and bulk waste collection schedule for the residential scheme is to accommodate the higher volume of garbage during the festive season.
“The additional domestic waste collection services will be on Jan 24 and 25 and for normal size bulk garbage, from Jan 15 to 24, which are over and above the existing service,” he told a press conference at Batu Maung solid waste transfer station near here today.
He added that the extra services will be provided free of charge, and individuals or contractors carrying out the garbage collection and cleaning services should not make any claims.
He said the extra service would be extended to Jan 26 if the need arises.
“For bulk waste such as old furniture, mattresses, pillows and so on, MBPP will increase the number of multi-lift (ML) containers by eight units in several public markets, which will serve as waste disposal hotspots during the festive season starting Jan 20,” he said.
Yew said for oversized bulk waste, house owners are advised to contact the MBPP urban services department at 04-2824284 for collection and cleaning.
“Oversized bulk waste includes old furniture, chairs, sofas, tables, beds and old mattresses. House owners are also encouraged to dismantle the large furniture into small pieces to save space in the lorry during the collection process,” he said.
