Agong disappointed with premature announcement on EO (Updated)

KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has expressed his immense regret over the revocation of the Emergency Ordinances (EO) to which His Majesty has yet to issue a decree as it was presented to him.

The announcement made by de facto Law Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan on July 26 to revoke the EO was inaccurate and misleading, said a statement from Istana Negara.

The king’s statement led to a massive ruckus in the Dewan Rakyat today with Opposition lawmakers demanding the resignation of Takiyuddin, who is Kota Baru MP, and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun.

In the statement issued by the Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, which was read out by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (PKR-Port Dickson), Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billal said the law minister’s statement has misled MPs and the public.

“Articles 150(2B) and 150(3) of the Federal Constitution clearly give the authority for the enactment and revocation of ordinances to the King,“ Anwar read.

Anwar also highlighted that the King was disappointed with Takiyuddinn and Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun as during a virtual audience on July 24, it was agreed that the revocation of the EO will be tabled and debated during this five-day Parliament special sitting.

Fadil in the statement also pointed out that the government disrespected the Rukun Negara and went against the King’s functions and powers as the head of state which is stated in the constitution.

Anwar said this action by the Perikatan Nasional (PN) leadership under Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin went against the law and disrespected the royal institution.

“Speaker, we are not just facing a constitutional crisis, it is a disgrace to the king, and the government’s attempt to lie to Parliament and the rakyat is laid bare,“ he said.

Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong) then asked Azhar why he hid this issue.

Parliament was then adjourned earlier than usual around 12 pm today and will start at 2.30 pm for the second session.
