KUALA TERENGGANU: A man pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of abusing his three-year-old son.

The 39-year-old father who was also an amputee, entered the plea after the charges were read out to him before Judge Nooriah Osman.

He was charged with abusing his only child at a house in Marang here between Sept 12 to 24 this year.

He was charged under Section 31 (1) (a) of the Child Act 2001 which carries a maximum fine of RM50, 000 or jail of not more than 20 years or both, upon conviction.

The accused, who was not represented, also faces an additional sentence to maximum six-month community service.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Mohd Izzat Wan Abdullah asked the court not to grant bail in order to prevent the accused from harassing several witnesses including the victim.

The court denied bail and set Nov 5 for mention.

It was reported that the child suffered facial injuries due to being hit by a blunt object. — Bernama
