GEORGE TOWN: A Bangladeshi man suffered severe burns on his body after a fire broke out at a two-storey shophouse in Jalan Penang, here today.

The 40-year-old man was believed to be in one of the rooms of the premises and ran out to ask for help from the public who then helped him to douse the fire on him.

It is understood that the victim is the caretaker of the shophouse, which is one of the heritage premises located here.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations officer Muzzamer Mohd Salleh when contacted today said they received an emergency call at 3.13pm and arrived ten minutes later.

“Upon arrival, we found a room at the back of the premises was engulfed in fire and took about 20 minutes to control it,“ he added.

Muzzamer said one victim escaped the fire unharmed but the Bangladeshi man suffered 80 percent burns on his body.

He said the victim was taken to the Penang Hospital, adding that investigations were underway to determine the cause of the blaze. — Bernama
