Brothers jailed, fined for defying MCO by operating business as usual

LAHAD DATU: Two siblings were sentenced to two months’ jail and fined RM1,000 each, in default a month’s jail, for defying the Movement Control Order (MCO) by operating their company, which does not provide essential services, as usual.

Magistrate Ryan Sagirann Rayner Jr order brothers Ng Khim Weng, 50, and Ng Kim Chuah, 47, to serve the jail sentence from today.

The two brothers had pleaded guilty to a charge with opening their business, Rintisan Hijau Sdn Bhd, at Pusat Industri Dam, Lahad Datu, as usual, despite the order to close, at 11am last March 28.

In the same court, motorcyclist Awang Mohd Nor Hafiz Awang Mohd Nor Ishak, 23, was sentenced to two months jail also for defying the MCO at Jalan Pantai, Lahad, at 11.30am last March 28.

In Kota Kinabalu, magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie sentenced a hawker, Bengsi Jilhani, to a total of 27 months jail on three counts of defying the MCO, as well as for obstructing a member of the People’s Volunteer Corp (Rela) from discharging his public function and evading police arrest at 2.15pm last March 26.

Bengsi was sentenced to 10 months jail each for obstructing the Rela personnel from discharging his duty and defying the MCO, to be served concurrently, and seven months’ jail for attempting to evade police arrest, to be served after he had completed serving the 10 months’ jail.

In the Sandakan magistrate’s court, a trader was sent to jail for three months and fined RM6,000, in default 10 months’ jail, for obstructing the police from discharging their public functions at a roadblock in Sandakan last March 28.

Magistrate Suhaila Selag also found Joe Lee Juu Dert, 27, guilty of reckless driving at the same place and time and sentenced him to a month’s jail and fined RM1,500, in default three months’ jail, for the offence.

Both the jail sentences were to be served consecutively. - Bernama
