KUALA LUMPUR: Police today clarified that entry into the Parliament building here was blocked after they received information of a gathering planned by certain quarters at the location.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Commissioner Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said about 500 police personnel were put on duty at the vicinity of the area following a claim there would be a crowd attending the gathering called “Solidarity with Anwar Ibrahim”.

“We checked with Parliament officials and learnt that there would be no sitting today. Due to this, we blocked and diverted traffic away from Parliament for the safety of the public.” he said, adding no commotions were reported at the scene.

Azmi said there were no prohibitions on Members of Parliament gaining access as police are aware they have their offices in the building.

He said as of now police had received two reports on the barricading of the entry into Parliament.

A group of people, including MPs who were incensed by the blockade at Parliament, had earlier gathered at Dataran Merdeka calling for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to step down.

On investigations into Saturday’s #Lawan protested which took place near the Masjid Jamek LRT station, Azmi said 11 people who participated in the demonstration have come forward to have their statements recorded.

He said police have identified and are seeking 47 others who were part of the protest and are in the midst of looking for more individuals.

Azmi said both gatherings on Saturday and today are being investigated under laws of the Peaceful Assembly Act and Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act and Penal Code for breach of the movement control order
