Cops to question Charles tomorrow over Zakir report

PETALING JAYA: The police will question Klang MP Charles Santiago (pix) tomorrow over a report lodged by controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik last month.

In a brief statement to the media, the DAP politician confirmed he would be present at Bukit Aman at 10.45am at the request of the authorities.

“The police are investigating a report lodged by Zakir,” he said today.

Charles was named as one of five individuals in a police report made on Aug 16 by Zakir, who accused them of defaming him through several statements that were issued over his speeches in Kelantan recently.

The other four named in his report were Human Resources Minister M Kulasegaran, Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy, Bagan Dalam assemblyperson Satees Muniandy and former ambassador Dennis J Ignatius.

The police had previously, on Sept 11, recorded statements from both Ramasamy and Satees, with both of them standing by their statements that Zakir had no rights to question the loyalty of Malaysians.

The Indian-born preacher caused controversy earlier last month when he said Chinese Malaysians were merely “old guests” in the country, during a ceramah in Kota Baru, Kelantan.

He also alleged that the Hindus here here were more loyal to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as opposed to the country’s own leader Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Over 100 police reports have been lodged against Zakir, with the Malaysian permanent resident also already having been questioned by the police last month.

Zakir has consistently maintained that his statements were taken out of context.
