BUKIT MERTAJAM: The magistrates court here today set May 28 for the case management of a former hairdressing saloon employee who was accused of causing the death of a college student in a Penang Bridge accident in January.
Magistrate Jamaliah Abd Manap set the date to allow counsel S. Parameswaran representing the accused, K. Vaitheswaran, to study the documents that were handed over to him by deputy public prosecutor M. Kalaivaanan.
Vaitheswaran, 21, was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine of RM20,000 apart from losing his driving licence for three years upon conviction.
He was accused of committing the offence at KM 4.0 of Penang Bridge heading towards Perai at about 3am on Jan 20.
In the incident, Vaitheswaran was said to be driving a car which collided with the SUV driven by Moey Yun Peng, 20, on the bridge which led to the SUV losing control and plunging into the sea.
Previously, the accused pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him for the first time on Feb 11 and was allowed a bail of RM7,000 in one surety. The court also ordered the suspension of his driving licence until the disposal of the case. - Bernama
