Don’t make the same mistakes Umno made, Mahathir tells Bersatu

SHAH ALAM: Parti Peribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) members have been warned not to take victory at the 14th General Election (GE14) for granted.

Its chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pix) said they won because Umno and Barisan Nasional were weak.

He urged them to learn from the mistakes that Umno made or risk being rejected by the voters the same way Umno was rejected.

“Umno had the support of the people because it was formed to fight for independence, in which they succeeded.

“The people supported the party and that is the reason for their 13 straight general election victories,“ he said in his speech to mark the third anniversary of Bersatu which was attended by party leaders and members.

Mahathir said Umno leaders thought they were invincible and had forgotten the reason they were formed, to fight for the people.

He added that they thought as long as they gave money to the people they would continue winning.

The Prime Minister warned his party members not to become arrogant and take the public’s support for granted.

Mahathir said Bersatu needs to understand and learn the reasons why Umno was defeated to help it maintain the support of the people and grow strong.

Earlier Mahathir attended a thanksgiving ceremony at the Shah Alam mosque.

Also present was PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Azmin Ali.
