EC to probe case of 150-year-old voter

KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission (EC) will look into the Sarawak voter who is 150 years old, its chairman Azhar Azizan Harun (pix) said today.

He said that EC would investigate the matter including some 73,000 voters above the age of 90, who are still alive.

“Logically, it is not possible for a person to be alive at 150. We will look into this and clean it up,” Azhar told reporters after the morning session of a roundtable on electoral reform with Dewan Rakyat Speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof and another 140 participants.

During the campaigning period of General Election 14, DAP Youth publicity secretary Abdul Aziz Isa said he had come across the voter, Mohd Said bin Mohd Arshad Mohd Said, when making a checklist from the EC’s official website.

The voter, listed on the official EC website, named Mohd Said Mohd Arshad was listed as born on Jan 1, 1868 with IC number 680101-13-XXXX.

He is a registered voter in the Krokop voting district which is located under Pujut state constituency and Miri parliamentary seat.

Azhar also said EC was checking on the 73,000 voters where 11,000 from the number had voted in the May 9 polls.

“About 100 are found to have used common addresses like mosques and others do not live in the registered address,” he said.

He said the commission is calling them up to identify the voters and action would be taken if necessary.

“We are looking into ways to update the list of voters and to constantly work with National Registration Department to automatically register the death of any voter. This would help the EC update its list,” he added.
