Enforcement of VEP at three areas in Johor postponed

PUTRAJAYA: The enforcement of the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) in all exit lanes at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex and the Sultan Abu Bakar CIQ (KSAB) complex in Johor Baru, during peak traffic hour operation, have been deferred until further notice.

The Transport Ministry in a statement today said that this was due to several issues that had been brought up to its attention, especially regarding the difficulty to get an appointment for the fitting of VEP-RFID tags.

Therefore, the statement said that another VEP-RFID tag installation centre (FC) would be opened at the Road Transport Department (RTD) office at KSAB, in addition to the existing four FCs.

“The date of commencement for this new centre would be announced soon,” the statement said.

“The ministry has also taken other measures to update the system to ensure that the registration process would go smoothly,” the statement said.

VEP registration was opened in April with a grace period of six months given to foreign vehicle owners to complete the registration process, which ends this October.

The MOT said that under Section 66H of the Road Transportation Act 1987, it is mandatory that drivers of foreign vehicles coming into Malaysia to apply for VEP.

The RFID-based system was also meant to tackle car theft and cloning syndicates, while also preventing vehicles with outstanding fines from leaving Malaysia.
