KUNAK: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) has detained 20 foreigners in Op Gasak which was conducted for five hours in Kampung Kunak 3 here yesterday.

Esscom Commander Datuk Hazani Ghazali said of these, 19 were Filipinos and one an Indonesian.

“The foreigners were detained in the operations which began at 4am until 10am, comprising 15 men and five women aged between 18 and 48 years,” he said in a statement here today.

Hazani said during the operations, 158 individuals were checked and taken to the Documentation Centre for security vetting before 138 were released.

“20 people who were detained for not possessing identification papers were taken to the temporary detention centre in Tawau for documentation purposes before being sent back to their countries of origin,” he said.

Meanwhile, in the same operations, Esscom also detained two men believed to be Pala’u for possession of tools and explosive substances to bomb fish.

“We confiscated two units of detonators and three bottles containing substances believed to be fertiliser as fish bombs,” he said.

The operations involved the Royal Malaysia Police, the Malaysia Armed Forces, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, the Immigration Department, the Sabah Water Department, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), the Social Welfare Department and the National Registration Department. — Bernama
