BUTTERWORTH: A former headmaster was today charged at a special court on corruption with eight counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT) amounting to RM35,500, from 2015 to 2017.
The accused, Chan Thye Choon, 61, the ex-headmaster of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Wellesley in George Town pleaded not guilty to all charges read before Judge Ahmad Azhari Abdul Hamid.
For the first seven charges, the man was charged with committing criminal breach of trust amounting to RM15,500 involving the rental payment for SK Wellesley field at a bank between Nov 10, 2015 to Dec 8, 2016.
For the last charge, Chan was accused of committing criminal breach of trust by accepting four cheques amounting to RM20,000 from Syarikat Visi Nusajaya Sdn Bhd involving field rental payment at a bank in George Town, between Jan 19 to March 7, 2017.
All the charges were made under Section 409 of the Penal Code which provides a maximum of 20 years jail and whipping and is liable to a fine on conviction.
Chan also pleaded not guilty to eight alternative criminal breach of trust charges at the same place and time under Section 403 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum of five years jail and whipping, as well as liable to a fine if found guilty.
Prosecution was conducted by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin.
Earlier, Chan who was not represented, appealed for the minimum bail affordable to him.
The court later set bail at RM2,500 in one surety for each charge and the accused has to report to MACC on the first week of every month and he is to surrender his passport to the court.
