KUALA LUMPUR: Local carriers will operate an additional 432 flights during the Chinese New Year (CNY) period.

Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) chief operating officer Azmir Zain said they would carry close to 59,000 passengers from Jan 18 to Feb 2.

“About 60% of those flights will be from Peninsular Malaysia to Sabah and Sarawak with close to 37,000 seats made available. This will involve 13 routes and 205 additional flights.”

Azmir said Mavcom has also kept a close eye on air fares to ensure they are reasonable.

He said compared with last year, fares for some routes have dropped while others have gone up.

Azmir said fares for flights from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu have dropped by 46% but fares from Johor Baru to Sibu have seen an increase of nearly 100%.

“In the four years of operations, Mavcom has received close to 6,000 complaints and the resolution rate has been 99%.”

Azmir advised passengers to get to the airports early as they will be congested due to the high number of travellers.

He said the shortfall in flights operated last year during the CNY festive period was slightly under 100% but for this year it has not been calculated yet.
