First Malaysian tests positive for coronavirus (Updated)

KUALA LUMPUR: A local man from Selangor has tested positive for coronavirus, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said today.

“The man had attended a meeting in Singapore where some of the international delegates was from China,“ he said.

The Health Ministry was now conducting vigorous contact tracing to determine the people the man had met.

“The man lives with his wife and we are trying to determine family members he met and those he had meetings with. His case was only confirmed to be positive on Monday,“ Dzulkefly told the media.

The man had been in Singapore from Jan 16 to 23 before returning home.

He only sought treatment at a private medical centre on Jan 29 when he started feeling unwell.

He was admitted to the Sungai Buloh Hospital isolation ward on Feb 2 and on Feb 3 he was confirmed to have been infected with the virus.

“We now have 10 people confirmed to have been infected by the coronavirus. Also on Feb 3, a 63-year-old Chinese national from Wuhan was confirmed to have the virus.

“The man had arrived from China on Jan 18 and he sought outpatient treatment at a private medical centre on Jan 23 after feeling unwell.

“The ministry was informed and the man was put under home surveillance for 14 days. On Feb 2, as he was still ill he was admitted to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital isolation ward for further treatment before he was diagnosed with the virus,“ Dzulkefly said.

The minister said the number of patients under investigation is 213 and of those 122 are locals. The others are 86 Chinese citizens and one each from Australia, Korea, Jordan, Brazil and Thailand.

Of the 213 cases, five had tested positive, 188 cases were negative and 20 are still undergoing laboratory tests.
