KUANTAN: Heavy rain since yesterday evening has caused flooding in the low-lying areas in the Kuantan district, forcing five members of a family in Kampung Baru Cherating to be evacuated at 9 am today.

Kuantan district police chief ACP Mohamad Noor Yusof Ali, when contacted, said the five evacuees were being accommodated at the relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Cherating.

It is learnt that the Tengku Puan of Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah would visit the victims today.

Yesterday, the meteorology department issued a warning of continuous heavy rain in several states in the peninsula and Sarawak until Sunday.

The areas that will be affected are Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Bachok, Machang and Pasir Puteh in Kelantan; Terengganu; Kuantan, Pekan and Rompin in Pahang; Mersing and Kota Tinggi in Johor, and Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu and Mukah in Sarawak. — Bernama
