GEORGE TOWN: A group of foreign workers who are supposed to work in the construction and maid services sector, was brought by their agent to work at an old folks’ home as helpers in Jalan Free School, here instead.

Their illegal antics were discovered after the old folks’ home was raided by the Immigration Department under ‘Op Bersepadu’ yesterday.

Penang Immigration director Muhamad Husni Mahmud said in the operation which began at 9am, 16 foreigners working at the nursing home were detained for violating their work permits.

“We received information that the owner of the home was hiring foreign workers illegally and during the raid some of them (foreigners) claimed they did not know it was an offence as they were sent by their agent to work here,“ he said in a statement, here today.

According to him, the department picked up 10 Indonesian women, two Vietnamese women, two Myanmar women and two Nepalese men aged 20 to 45.

“During a search at two restaurants in Air Itam, we also arrested an Indian national man and five Indonesian women aged 30 to 40 working there.

“Investigations found they have no travel documents, “ he said. — Bernama
