KUALA LUMPUR: The police have arrested 28 individuals at three condominium units at Jalan Stonor yesterday on suspicions of being involved in online gambling activities.
The suspects, 22 men and six women, aged 17 to 53, were arrested around 3pm.
Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department chief SAC Saiful Annuar Yusoff said preliminary investigations revealed the call centre had promoted online gambling and also tried to convince customers to invest and visit websites to purchase non-existent products.
He said investigations also revealed the premises were rented at RM10,000 a month.
“The activities are thought to be raking in a profit of RM5,000 a day.
“In addition, the police also seized eight computers, 16 laptops, 112 mobile phones of assorted brands, three modems and two access cards,” he said in a statement today.
Saiful Annuar said the seized items are estimated to be worth RM304,000 and that the suspects would be remanded today to facilitate further investigations.
The case would be investigated under Section 4(1)(c) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
“The police would like to warn the public not to be involved in any illegal gambling activities as severe action will be taken to organisers, premise owners, workers, players or customers in our effort to stamp out gambling activities in Kuala Lumpur,” he said. — Bernama
