PETALING JAYA: The number of schools closed in Selangor has increased to 214 following very unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings of more than 200.

The Education Ministry in a statement said as of 5.15am today, an additional 99 schools were closed in Petaling Perdana, Kuala Selangor, Gombak dan Petaling Utama.

“The closures are based on the API reading at the Shah Alam Station which reached more than 200 in readings beginning at 12am,“ the statement read.

“The Petaling Perdana PPD (district education office) recorded the closure of 87 schools, whereas the Kuala Selangor and Gombak PPD respectively saw the closure of five schools each and the Petaling Utama PPD two.”

The ministry also said the number of students affected are 231, 921.

According to the Malaysian Air Pollution Index Management System (APIMS) portal at 8am today, Johan Setia API reading is at the very unhealthy level of 245, making it the highest in Selangor followed by Shah Alam 220, Petaling Jaya 204, Klang 202 and Kuala Selangor 196.
