Facility trying to raise funds as contributions plunge to a trickle due to Covid pandemic

PETALING JAYA: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Shan Ai Handicapped Welfare Home in Cheras, Selangor, has found its number of visitors and supporters declining, and its residents are in urgent need of help.

The home was set up in 2017 by Ong Wun Lok, initially offering shelter to 14 elderly individuals.

Shan Ai, which runs on charity and welfare, still takes in the handicapped and elderly, and provides a warm and safe place for them to call home.

A volunteer, who wished to be known only as Lucas, said he spends most of his time at the home.

The home has five volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to ensure its 16 residents live comfortably and are well taken care of.

“Shan Ai constantly strives to contribute to society through the spirit of giving and caring. There are two caretakers and we do not charge those who live under our roof, and we make sure their basic needs are met.

“Our main motivation is to provide for those who need a place to call home ... the elderly and the handicapped,” Lucas said.

He said the organisation is in need of funds for its annual Mid-Autumn Gala, that is to take place this month.

“We intend to raise funds to buy new clothes for the residents. Our budget is around RM60 per person for a comfortable set of clothes for each of them. But any small contribution would be appreciated as it would make the folks here happy to know that they are thought of.”

The home welcomes any amount or form of contribution.

“We also need help in raising RM15,580 for our expenses this month. This would go towards meals, utility bills, rent, transportation fees, medical expenses and miscellaneous payments,” Lucas said.

Those interested in contributing to the home may contact Ong at 016-5588 578.
