IGP assures efforts are ongoing to reunite Indira Gandhi with her child

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are taking all necessary efforts to trace the former husband and the daughter of M. Indira Gandhi to ensure the woman is reunited with her child, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador (pix) said.

“The police are working towards bringing closure to this case,” he said at a press conference at the Police Officers’ College in Cheras.

“It has gone on for so long. I have given my assurance that we will not allow the case to keep going on like this. Efforts are ongoing and I am personally looking into it. However, I cannot do this overnight and what we want is a happy ending for both mother and father.”

It was reported on Monday that Indira planned to sue Abdul Hamid for failing to trace her daughter Prasana Diksa, who was taken away by her ex-husband Muhammad Ridhuan Abdullah, a Hindu who embraced Islam in 2009 when she was just 11 months old.

Following a civil suit by Indira, the High Court ordered in 2014 for police to trace Prasana and hand her over to her mother. However, to date, Indira’s daughter and ex-husband are yet to be found by police.

On another matter, Abdul Hamid said police would assist the Ministry of Health in any way possible in containing the coronavirus outbreak.

He said police are duty bound in rendering any assistance to the ministry like how it did when tracing a family of Chinese nationals in Johor who had fled a hospital where they were quarantined after testing positive for the virus.

Abdul Hamid said police will act swiftly on rumour-mongers who spread false news on the disease in the country.

On a separate case regarding police investigations on the nine audio recordings of the conversations of high-profile individuals related to the 1MDB scandal, Abdul Hamid said the probe is ongoing and police have summoned Baling MP Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim to have his statement recorded.

The audio recordings were handed over to police for investigations by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) earlier this month.
