KUALA LUMPUR: The proposal to introduce the two-wheel e-hailing service by Indonesian company Go-Jek in Malaysia will be deliberated in the Cabinet.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman would be tabling the proposal at the soonest.

Loke then explained that upon agreement by the Cabinet, his ministry would conduct a feasibility study.

He added that no monopoly would be allowed if the proposal was passed.

“We have not made a final decision on whether to allow (two-wheel e-hailing services) or not,” he told reporters at the launch of the Monorail four-car train at the Bukit Nanas Monorail station today.

“Once we make a decision ... let’s say in the future we allow it, we are not going to just allow one company to run it. We do not allow any monopoly. Others private companies will be allowed to operate,” he said.

Loke added that Syed Saddiq would raise the matter in Cabinet from the perspective of youth employment, whereas his ministry would be deliberating the matter from the safety and public transportation point of view.

Yesterday, Syed Saddiq expressed his intentions to introduce Indonesia’s motorcycle-based ride-hailing service Go-Jek to Malaysia saying that it could open more job opportunities to youths.

The Youth and Sports Minister said this was an effort to help the motorcyclists, as it was not enough for the government to organise a one-off programme or to build race tracks.

“They want to be defended, they need jobs. That is a more pressing issue,” he said in a one-minute video posted on Twitter.

Yesterday, it was reported that founder of Go-Jek, Nadiem Makarim, met with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Loke and Syed Saddiq to discuss the matter.
