KUALA LUMPUR: The Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) Bill will be referred to the Parliament’s Special Select Committee for Consideration of Bills.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof, had said earlier said that the bill would be debated, passed and approved today.

However, attempts by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong to table the bill for second reading was met with resistance.

Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (BN-Bera) voiced his dissatisfaction, stating that the Bill involved the reputation of the police and more time should be allocated to further examine and debate it before passing it off.

After the lunch break, Deputy Speaker Nga Kor Ming declared that the Bill was not going to be put to vote, instead discussed and debated, after which the minister will then table a motion to for the Special Select Committee for further consideration of the Bill.

Nga said the “Committee” will then study the issues raised during the debate/discussion.

The IPCMC Bill was tabled for the first reading on July 18. It aims to replace the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC).
