JOHOR BARU: The Johor government is taking precautionary measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus from Wuhan, China so that it will not affect Johor Visit Year.

State Tourism, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman, Liow Cai Tung said among the measures was to ensure that every Chinese tourist or local citizen returning from the republic undergo health screening at any of the state’s entry points

These include Senai International Airport; Johor Baru Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex and Sultan Abu Bakar CIQ Complex in Gelang Patah.

“Our focus will be on Malaysians who may be returning from China for the Chinese New Year celebration, here, soon.

“The screening will be done by the State Health Department before they depart and after landing at the airport,“ she told reporters after observing a health screening with state Education, Health and Human Resources Committee chairman, Aminolhuda Hassan at LTAS, here today.

Liow said the state government would continue to monitor and obtain information on developments pertaining to the virus from the Health Department.

“Since we have direct flights from Guangzhou, China to LTAS, we urge any locals who have been to Wuhan to report to us so that the Health Department can monitor,” she said.

Aminolhuda said medical teams had been stationed at 12 entry points in the state to conduct screening.

“If they (travellers) are diagnosed with fever symptoms, an examination will be conducted in the quarantine centre at the entry point and referred to the health facility for treatment,“ he said.

Aminolhuda said so far, the outbreak had not been detected in Johor, but people returning from China were advised to monitor their health for 14 days (from date of return) and in the event of a fever, they should seek treatment at a nearby health clinic.

The international media have reported that as of Monday (Jan 20), six deaths had been recorded in Wuhan as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

The virus is also reported to have spread to a number of countries, with the latest being the United States. - Bernama
