MALACCA: The Malacca government is aiming to provide telecommunications and internet service.

Malacca Communication, Multimedia, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Kerk Chee Yee said towards this end, the state government planned to build and upgrade 100 telco towers next year.

He said telco towers were sorely lacking in the state and that between 2015 and 2017 there had only been about 30 telco towers built each year, while this year from Jan to April, only six telco towers had been built and delivered.

“Our population is growing denser while data usage per person is also going up. Hence, the demand for more or better-performing telco towers also increases.

“Based on the assessment made by telco companies and government agencies, if we were to satisfy this growing trend, Malacca is lacking an increase of 100 telco infrastructure per year,“ he said in a statement here today.

He added that since taking over the portfolio, he learnt the urgency to tackle these problems and all efforts paid off when from May until November this, Malacca built 46 telco infrastructure, which meant improved cellular coverage in 46 areas. — Bernama
