Malaysia records 21 new Covid-19 cases, imcluding 16 local transmissions

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia recorded 21 new Covid-19 cases today, comprising 16 local infections and five imported cases, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pix).

He said the 16 local transmissions involve 15 Malaysians and one foreigner.

Five of the cases were reported in Sabah, seven in Kedah, two in Penang, and one each in Selangor and Sarawak.

“In Sabah, two cases were from the Benteng LD Cluster involving a Malaysian and a non-citizen, one case of a Malaysian from the Selamat Cluster, a new cluster in Semporna, one case of screening for admission to Hospital Tawau and one ship sign-off screening in Sipitang Port.

“In Kedah, six cases are from the Sungai Cluster involving Malaysians and one screening case in the administrative Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) in Kota Setar district, also a Malaysian,” he said in a statement on Covid-19 updates here today.

Dr Noor Hisham said the local infections in Penang involved two Malaysians who were confirmed Covid-19 positive following screening of close contacts of case 9,397 who are family members staying in the same house.

“One case in Selangor involves symptomatic screening at Hospital Sungai Buloh and in Sarawak, one case from screening at the international entry point, both being Malaysians,“ he said.

He said the five imported cases comprised two which were reported in Selangor after their return from New Zealand and three in Sabah who were infected in India, Pakistan and China.

“This brings the number of positive cases to 10,052, with active cases having infectivity totalling 674,“ he added.

He said 15 cases had recovered today, raising the cumulative figure for recoveries to 9,250, or 92 per cent of the total number of cases.

Dr Noor Hisham said no fatalities were reported today, keeping the death toll at 128, or 1.27 per cent of the total number of positive cases.

He said 13 positive cases are still being treated in the Intensive Care Unit, with two requiring ventilator support.-Bernama
