PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s healthcare system is one of the best in the world and has the ability to deal with any Covid-19 spike, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Special Functions) Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Yusof.
The minister’s assurance comes on the back of a third wave of Covid-19 infections which is sweeping across Sabah and other states in the country with an average of over 700 patients since last month.
“Data has shown that our country has one of the best healthcare systems in the world, and is able to handle any spike and reduce the rate of transmission. But the public must play their part by adhering to the new norm to break the chain,” Mohd Redzuan said in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
“We are having daily discussions in assessing the frontliners’ performance and how to improve our tackling of the pandemic to ease the worry of the public.”
Last year, Malaysia was ranked first as the world’s best in healthcare by the Annual Global Retirement Index 2019 ahead of France, Thailand, Ecuador, Mexico and Costa Rica.
Malaysia was also touted as among one of the best countries to control the spread of Covid-19 back in June, before a spike in Sabah last month resulted in high three-digit cases almost daily.
Mohd Redzuan added that mass Covid-19 screening for all Malaysians is not necessary.
“As of now, Covid-19 screening is only done on people who display symptoms and not on everyone, because as long there is no vaccine, anyone can be infected with the virus anytime.”
When asked by Datuk Jalaludin Alias (PN-Jelebu ) if elections can be held during the pandemic, Mohd Redzuan said that is a decision for the Election Commission to make.
